We have 9 of our staff who live on the island.  They were able to return to their homes today for the first time.  5 of the nine have extensive flood damage.  And of course houses that have been closed up with salt water damage for 11 days have horrible mold, mildew, and mud.  Tomorrow we will help remove carpet and sheetrock, take ruined furniture and household items to the curb, help sift through what is salvageable, and help make plans for how to put lives back together over the next several weeks, all without power and potable water. We'll be helping explore housing alternatives.  With the fuel costs, trying to find something close enough to commute is a challenge.

Our office building had 8 feet of water and 4 inches of mud.  We did not get any damage to our offices on the 7th floor but it will be a while before they get the building up and running.

Interesting reality tidbit:
Mental Health Mental retardation offices are in our building also. They set up a clinic for their patients on the mainland.  However they were finding it very difficult to continue treatments without their medical records (they are not electronic.) So last week they set up a ‘bucket brigade’-like line of about 20 folks in the stair well with flashlights and battery lanterns and moved the records from the 4th and 6th floors to a truck to take to the temporary facilities.  This is a teeny tiny example of what extraordinary efforts are going on in the Galveston Houston area continuously.

All of our centers and the program office were impacted by the storm. Three centers and the program office evacuated. Coastal AHEC, Greater Houston AHEC and the East Texas AHEC Program Office are not back up and running yet with employees still struggling to get their basic needs met and our offices not operational.  Two more centers lost power and had minor damage but are now fully operational.  Five centers had evacuees in their communities and they all had staff who volunteered with these special populations.

We were very blessed last week with refreshingly cool weather that helped us make beginnings to recovery.  I think all, except one, of us who live on the mainland now have power and have minimal damage to our homes. My husband and I only had yard damage and were only without power for 7 days.  Like most folks we stayed with family and friends who supported us incredibly and made being away from home in stressful times fun!

Our folks are brave caring and hard working. They are a joy to be associated with in how they respond to adversity. I am very grateful to know them and love them.
