Press Release:
Pandemic Influenza
The Pandemic Flu
The Honorable Mike Leavitt, Secretary of Health and Human Services said history should be the guide. Some pandemic — whether it is H5N1 or another virus — is virtually inevitable.
"There were 10 pandemics in the last 300 years; three in the last 100 years. There is no reason to think the 21st century will be different," Leavitt said. While preparations are being made for various potential scenarios, Leavitt said there was no way to avoid some period of time when a pandemic would not be well contained and many people could get sick and die.
Leavitt told FOX News that the United States was not prepared to handle an outbreak.
"We're not. And no one in the world is," Leavitt said.
“I think we should let Katrina and Rita be our guides as to whether and how we as citizens should prepare our homes, businesses, and neighborhoods, for any event that has the capacity to impair, inhibit or shut down government aid and services,” Jim Conditt, East Texas Area Health Education Center - Homeland Security Preparedness Trainer.
You can be better prepared by following the recommendations on the Pandemic Flu check list.
The Federal Government, the State Government, nor the Municipal Government is prepared to meet even your basic survival needs at the onset of these types of disasters. “Only you can get your house in order,” Jim Conditt said.
On Thursday, September 28, 2006 Jim Conditt, East Texas Area Health Education Center - Homeland Security Preparedness Trainer will be making a home visit in the neighborhood of ____________. The purpose of this household meeting is to inform the citizens of Austin the crucial need to prepare for disasters and specifically the Pandemic Flu. If you are waiting on the government to step in and assist- then you could be making a lethal mistake.
