UTMB Residency Fair May 9, 2007  (United States)

We have an opportunity to set up a booth at the UTMB medical students’ annual residency fair.  Led by medical students the fair invites residencies to set up displays and market their residency to medical students.  The fair is set for May 9 from 4 to 6 PM.

If we set up a display, what kind of messages/information might we want to share with the medical students and maybe the folks from residencies? Mary

I think we should definitely promote the www.texashealthmatch.com website. And have information concerning NHSC. Possibly a handout describing the services avaialbe after entering a practice. i.e. CE resource link, possible resource page to CMS materials, etc. Deb W.

Re: UTMB Residency Fair May 9, 2007  (United States)
Having been one of the residency's at a fair in a prior lifetime, it will be hard to draw the resident to your booth and even harder for them to remember what it is that AHEC does after the fair concludes. The students that attend these are generally 1 - 3 year medical students. They still have to complete their schooling and graduate and match to do a residency somewhere. Many do not know what kind of medicine they would like to specilize in so they are still shopping around.  I would stick with the basic overview of what AHECs do and the resources that are available for them. If you can have the medical student remember that AHECs are a resource after three years of medical school and three years of residency, you will have probably done as good as most and better than some other booths. .

I agree I think we should set up a booth and promote Texas Health Match as well as rotation opportunities in our communities.  If  I am able to re-arrange my schedule I would like to attend.  Terry

Thanks Terry for offering to attend.

I wonder if a message that offers to help with student rotations in the area of their residency interest would be another approach. Mary

Re: UTMB Residency Fair May 9, 2007  (United States)

The more often this group hears about AHEC the more likely they are to remember us when they are needing assistance. I know as a CBE coordinator when I am working with the Medical School Students or someone just starting their residency, I am making them aware with community orientation materials that there are employment opportunites in the region and to check them out. Even if it may be a number of years down the road before selecting a place to practice their speciality.  We hope that at some point they will recall that they heard about AHEC and turn to the agency as a resource for their various health professions needs.

It would be great resourse to create some sort of map with residency programs identified and providing contact information to the AHEC in that region.

I believe providing an overview of AHEC, TexasHealthMatch, information on our communities and possibly providing donated housing information would be very beneficial.

Re: UTMB Residency Fair May 9, 2007  (United States)

This is excellent discussion and ideas.  Here are the ideas, so far, for the Display for the UTMB Residency Fair May 9, 2007:

  1. map with residency programs identified and providing contact information to the AHEC in that region
  2. Texas Health Match brochures
  3. information concerning NHSC
  4. handout describing the services available after entering a practice. i.e. CE resource link, possible resource page to CMS materials, etc.
  5. basic overview of what AHECs do and the resources that are available for them
  6. offers to help with student rotations in the area of their residency interest

Thanks to the contributors to the discussion:

  • Deb Warren
  • Marshall Kratz
  • Terry Willemin
  • Johanna Luza
  • Melissa Hare
  • Special thanks to Terry for agreeing to be one of the persons attending

We'll need some help getting the ideas into action.

Mary

Re: UTMB Residency Fair May 9, 2007  (United States)

I can not commit to attending due to a number of activites already committed to. Howerver, I can contact Harvey Browning at DSHS to have a supply of the NHSC brochures sent to the Program office . How many should I request?  Send them to your attention Mary?

Also, Brian Sulllivan did a lovely job of  maintaininnga map that had all of the East Texas Centers idenified and the CBE coordinator contac informetion. Should be easy to update that document and include it in the information.  That may take care of the #6 on the list of ideas for the display.

Deb W.
